How Psychology can play a role in the management of Gout

Gout is a painful form of arthritis, caused by a buildup of excessive uric acid crystals in the joints. Gout attacks refer to the sudden flare-ups of symptoms such as severe pain, swelling, and redness in the affected joint. Some gout sufferers may also develop other health problems such as severe arthritis and changes to the shape of the joints, heart disease and kidney stones.

Gout is a chronic condition and living with gout can have a significant impact on a person’s mental well-being and quality of life. The severe pain, problems with mobility and disruptions to daily functioning can lead to feelings of frustration, anxiety and depression. Therein lies a psychological aspect in the management of gout.

Psychology and Gout

Research studies have shown that psychological factors such as stress, anxiety and depression can contribute to the development and exacerbation of gout symptoms. Specifically, when one is stressed, the body loses pantothenic acid, which is responsible in aiding the body to remove uric acid, and this in turn leads to buildup of uric acid. Additionally, stress can also compromise the immune system, leading to more frequent inflammation and joint damage.

Psychology can play an important role in the development and management of gout. Seeking psychotherapy to develop coping strategies to manage stress, anxiety and depression is important.

In addition, psychotherapy can help to address issues of poor motivation and non-compliance to medication and/or dietary requirements, which are crucial in improving physical symptoms of gout. Once these issues are addressed, gout sufferers will be able to improve their overall physical and mental well-being, as well as better quality of life.
